Cooper's Adventure no.2
(BTW- all of my stories about Coops are true stories and this one is no different.)
We joke that every time Cooper falls on the floor and bangs his head- which is a lot- he loses another brain cell. But today he proved us wrong about his lack of intelligence- I guess his last brain cell was a clever one!
It was six am and I skipped along in the long dewy grass with Cooper by my side, bouncing through the fields. Rays of sun peeped through the gaps in the trees. Cooper sniffed the air and suddenly bolted off into the forest.
But as suddenly as he charged off, he reappeared by our sides and sat bolt upright in front of us, refusing to move. He barked and stared towards the meadow.
"If it's a rabbit, we're not interested Coops," my mum sighed, a yawn escaping from her.
I peeped around the bend to the meadow and a horse stood in front of me!
Looking into it's soulful eyes was like staring into midnight, like stars dancing. It was a foal, elegant with a generous dose of mischief- it sort of reminded me of Coops. It definitely was not supposed to be here. It had escaped from the paddock near the forest.
Suddenly the noise of beeping horns and belting traffic filled me with dread. The foal was in danger!
(Ok-it was a country lane and there was one super slow tractor but I'm trying to set the scene here!)
My mum stayed with the horse and tried to calm it down whilst me and Coops ran to get the farmer. We dashed through overgrown plants and darted between trees until we reached the paddock.
The other horses regally stood behind the wooden fence, chewing on he grass. It was as if they were saying: "We did try to stop him!"
Part of the fence was broken and was now just a pile of splintering wood enveloped in moss.
I wondered whether the farmer would be awake yet as it was still very early. The cottage looked like it would crumble at any second. Ivy crept up the stone walls and the windows were coated in dust and partly shattered.
"Hello?" I nervously called, "Hello?"
Aside from a few hoses whinny'ing, I was met with silence. I tried again, Cooper stared up at me and decided to take matters into his own paws...
He howled louder than I have ever heard him howl before. He barked and barked until the farmer finally heard.
The red door of the cottage creaked open and a bleary-eyed man emerged. He was in red tartan pyjamas and he rubbed his eyes.
"Is everything alright?" He groaned as Cooper barked and attempted to pull off his slipper.
"One of your horses got loose, it's near the road!" I told him. He scratched his bald head.
"It was Cooper who alerted us to it," I added.
"Well thanks for letting us know buddy." He said, patting Coops on the head. Then Coops led us to the field where mum was with the horse.
**********
"Thank you so much for helping!" The farmer said as he lead the horse back into the stables. "If it were not for Cooper here, this fellow could have been hit by a car!"
Cooper proudly sat down... and burped.
