The very first VE day (Happy 8th of May!)
*Travelling back in time by 80 years*
I squeezed my way through the bustling crowd feeling like a tiny rain drop in this sea of people, all waving Union Jack flags in the air. It felt like being swallowed up by an ocean of relief and not knowing how to get out. Cheering echoed across the streets of London as King George emerged from the palace and the rest of the royal family gathered on the balcony with him.
Cameras flashed like gun-shots and the tsunami of happiness and hope drenched me, filling me with the exhilaration of a brighter future ahead. No more nights where I wonder if I will still be alive the next morning. No more of being an evacuee in the lonely countryside, staring out of the window watching the sun rise - which is really my beloved city in flames. No more crowding into our little, tin-roofed Anderson shelter. No more watching shooting stars in the night sky which are really bullets.
The war was over!
Just beautiful. Poetic artistry x
