The Island Part 2
Here is part 2 of my last post so get comfy and make sure you have a dog or some kind of animal cuddled up to you! (If you don’t have a pet, then just grab a cuddly toy.)
To be honest, I was quite surprised that I had survived on the island so far. I know that when I described it, it seemed like this beautiful tropical paradise - though it was very beautiful and tropical - but again, I was out there in the wild all on my own. I didn’t really bother to sleep because I was so worried about the mosquitoes who had already been banqueting on my blood, and also other dangerous critters that were possibly lurking around at night.
I had been surviving on
mangoes, berries and fish and I even found an open coconut at one point which I
drank from. I was so tired from the lack of sleep too. I kept thinking of Dad
and Izire back at home, they must have been worried sick about me. They must have been coming back for me soon.
I hoped so anyway.
I dipped my bare feet
into the lagoon. My brother would have loved it there. I kicked my feet around
the warm water, heated by the torrid sun.
I must have been there
for a while but the next thing I knew I could see a boat out in the distance. I
was overjoyed to see another human at last! I jumped up, flicking water all
over myself and bounced up and down, wildly waving my hands in the air hoping
they’d see me.
As they got closer I
heard people calling and a dog barking, it sounded just like my Red Setter,
Ruby’s bark. I squinted my eyes. The dog stood regally at the edge of the boat,
just staring at me, it’s red, glossy coat waving around in the breeze. It was Ruby! It was our boat!
The sun had now started
to disappear behind the dark clouds so it was not very easy to see without its
great beams of light but I was certain that it was Dad and Izire on the boat. Red
setters are quite a rare breed so it is unusual to see one (especially in the
middle of the ocean).
I began to feel fat drops of water land on my frizzy hair and I started to shout and call to them. “Dad! Dad! Over here Dad!” I screamed, and sure enough, they were sailing towards the island!
It must have taken
about half an hour or so for the boat to reach me and by the time they did, the
rain was pouring down. It ricocheted off the palm leaves and the thick, dull
clouds blocked the sun. It was amazing how the weather could change so fast!
We were reunited with a
warm, emotional embrace. We hugged and Ruby catapulted herself onto me, licking
my face as her curly ears flapped about in her excitement. Despite the awful
weather, I laughed and beamed.
Izire was grinning ear
to ear. “I can’t believe we finally found you! You wouldn’t believe how worried
we were, we’ve been trying to track you down for ages, we didn’t even know
whether you were still alive or if you had drowned!” he gabbled, all in one
breath.
Dad chuckled, “Well
we’re all together again now so let’s get sailing back home.” He frowned up at
the grey sky bringing a finger to his chin. “It’s already hammering down with
rain and I think a storm might be on its way.”
But as we went back to
our boat we let out a gasp. It was nowhere to be seen! We frantically searched
around the area. We were trying so hard to believe that we were in the wrong
part of the island and that we would turn a corner and there our boat would be,
but we knew that it had somehow floated away.
A great rumble came
from the sky and what had once been the gentle, calm ocean had now turned into
a dangerous beast, its waves crashing and getting closer to the island every
minute.
“What are we going to do?” burst out Izire,
throwing his dry hands up to his head. A violent flash struck through the dim
sky making my heart hammer in my chest. Lightning. We ran for shelter in a cave
by the edge of the beach. Ruby was petrified by the sight. She had never seen
lightning before and went mad.
Ignoring her protesting
whimpers, we dragged her into shelter and we all huddled together to stay warm.
“Right” said Dad, putting a hand on each of our shoulders. “Let’s think
logically here, everything is gonna be alright.”
Then he suddenly burst
into song, “Every little thing is gonna be alright” he danced about singing his
favourite Bob Marley song ‘Three little birds’. I opened my mouth to say ‘Dad,
read the room, it’s not the time!’ But I decided to close it again and my lips
formed a small grin.
We all started to dance
about goofily and sing along. The sky rumbled and the rain poured but we were
together and that was all that mattered.
